The solar panel is called photovoltaic when it is used to produce electrical energy from sunlight. In this sense, it is important to mention that we have two types of photovoltaic solar panels: monocrystalline and polycrystalline. What is the difference? Which is the best option?

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels

The photovoltaic solar panels monocrystalline are more expensive per watt and occupy less area, on the other hand, the polycrystalline are cheaper per watt, take up more space and are therefore less efficient. But what does photovoltaic solar panel efficiency mean?

The efficiency of a photovoltaic module, refers to the watt/m². To make it easier to understand, we present the following example:

Let's imagine that we have two photovoltaic solar panels, one monocrystalline and the other polycrystalline. The first has an efficiency of 18% and a power of 300 watts, while the second has an efficiency of 15% and a power of 250 watts. Both have an area equal to 1.65m².

To get 3000 watts, we need:

• 12 polycrystalline photovoltaic panels 250w → which have a final area of 19,8m²
• 10 monocrystalline photovoltaic panels 300w → which have a final area of 16,5m²

Observing the example above, it is clear that the most efficient solution is monocrystalline panels, because they occupy less space for the same installed power. However, this is the only advantage. Both cases have 3000w of total installed power and the factor that will define which solution will have a higher production will only be the quality of the manufacturer and not the type of cell.
